====== Use a router as a switch or Access Point ======

Turning your FreshTomato router into a switch or Access Point (AP) is easy. The difference between using the router as a switch and using it as an Access Point involves making use of only the wireless interfaces while using it as a switch. In other words, first configure the router as a switch, then enable access point functionality in the /Basic/[[basic-network|Network]] menu.


===== Configure the router as a switch =====

In the /Basic/[[basic-network|Networ]][[basic-network|k]] menu:

  - Set the "Type" setting to "Disable" for each WAN. \\ \\ 
  - In the "LAN" section, assign the router an IP address \\ in the same subnet as the gateway router and\\ outside the DHCP range (e.g. 192.168.1.2). \\ \\ 
  - Uncheck "DHCP" to disable it for all WANs. \\ \\ 
  - Set the gateway and DNS addresses to match \\ the address of the gateway router. Here: 192.168.1.1.

Now, in the /Advanced/[[advanced-vlan|VLAN]] menu:

  * Add the WAN port to the LAN FIXME

Next, connect an Ethernet cable to any LAN port on each router. This will create a LAN-to-LAN connection. On the router acting as a switch, you can connect the cable to the WAN port, but only if that port has been reassigned to the LAN bridge.

Finally, on both routers, check that every port is assigned to the same bridge (e.g. "br0") in the /Advanced/[[advanced-vlan|VLAN]] menu. <FIXME

===== Configure Access Point mode =====

  - Follow the steps above to configure the router as a switch. \\ \\ 
  - Next, in the /Basic/[[basic-network|Network]] menu, simply add an Access Point \\ as you normally would. FIXME \\ \\ Additional APs can be added as virtual interfaces in the \\ /Advanced/[[virtual_wireless|Virtual Wireless]] menu. Ensure all ports and all \\ wireless interfaces are assigned to the same bridge (e.g. br0) \\ in  the /Advanced/[[advanced-vlan|VLAN]] menu.
